If you were to take a peek at e-commerce site, Etsy, it’s understandable as to how you can guess that many of its shoppers are probably women. The online destination for all things handmade and crafty offers endless options for fashion, lifestyle and beauty mavens of any aesthetic. So you can imagine how intrigued we were to find out who the creative makers behind the entrepreneurial website exactly were.
According to a recent blog post from the company, a huge percentage of Etsy sellers actually happen to be women. The retailer announced in a recent report that 86% of the site’s businesses have female owners that run them – which, if you ask us, isn’t that surprising. Just think, who else would come up with the idea of a custom wooden cake topper?!
After surveying 4,000 US Etsy sellers, the brand found out that along with a leading female percentage, 56% of its sellers are college educated and 37% are under 35. For 45% of the surveyed participants, Etsy is the first place that they’ve ever sold their goods – giving reason as to why the company is calling itself “an on-ramp to entrepreneurship.”
And surprisingly, most of the creative geniuses running these shops consider this to be more than a hobby. 76% of sellers categorize their shop as a business, and 90% say that they’d like to grow in the future – which can definitely be accomplished, especially with the news of Etsy’s value earlier this year.
