If you’re at the top of your fashion A-game, then you should be aware of the latest face that graced Christian Dior’s most recent Haute Couture runway – Sofia Mechetner. But if you’re unfamiliar, here’s a quick recap: the label’s creative director, Raf Simons, discovered the Israeli teen after she wandering into a Dior boutique and instantly grabbed his attention. Fast-forward to about two weeks ago, and the blonde beauty is strutting alongside models at Paris Fashion Week like a pro. There’s just one problem: she’s only 14-years-old.
According to Styleite, Mechetner’s agent described her as a young Claudia Schiffer – and we have to admit, she is pretty goregeous. But with her introduction into the modeling world at such a questionable age, many people are wondering if she’s too young. It’s no secret that the modeling side of fashion can easily turn into an unhealthy situation, especially after the state of New York classified models under 18-years of age to be “child performers” last year.
On the flip side, Mechetner is being given a chance to live a fairytale life. Styleite reported that the 14-year-old was sharing a bedroom with her two siblings and mother in a rundown apartment in Tel Aviv before jetting to Paris to get rejected by Viva agents. And now the young teen has signed a Dior contract for $265,000 – the perfect rags to riches story if you ask us.
While Mechetner has an amazing opportunity on her hands, there’s no denying that 14-years of age is still pretty young to start a career in fashion. We just hope that the potential damaging ideals don’t affect her future.
