For the past few months, rumors have been swirling around major publishing giant, Conde Nast, in relation to the continuance of several beloved glossies. And let’s just say, things haven’t been looking too good. The latest speculation included fitness magazine, Self, which was on the verge of either folding altogether or possibly merging with beauty publication, Allure. But now, there’s a likelihood that the glossy is looking at a more web-based future.
According to Mashable, an impromptu meeting held by Anna Wintour at the tail-end of NYFW announced a new direction for the revamping of Self: an endeavor that involves a completely digital focus. A Mashable source revealed that the newest addition to the Self team, Carolyn Kylstra – who hails from Buzzfeed –, will take on a position as the mag’s new digital director. It’s no surprise that the glossy has been struggling when it comes to newsstand status. The publication hired its editor-in-chief, Joyce Chang, just last year who’s taken a more stylish approach to the brand.
But aside from its latest fashion-forward cover stars – i.e. Karlie Kloss, Candice Swanepoel and Joan Smalls – sales still seem to be down for the print. And with gossips that December could mark the last issue for the publication, there’s hope that Kylstra could take Self on a more beneficial digital journey.
We’re keeping our fingers crossed.
